In recent years, school safety has been a growing concern across the United States. Findings from the Protecting America’s Schools report by the U.S. Secret Service have highlighted the complex factors contributing to targeted school violence, underscoring a need for preventative measures that go beyond physical security. SEL Academy's programs offer a proactive, holistic approach to fostering safe, inclusive school environments, equipping students and staff with essential social-emotional tools to prevent crises before they escalate.

1. Building Multidisciplinary Threat Assessment Teams

The Protecting America’s Schools report emphasizes the effectiveness of multidisciplinary threat assessment teams, which bring together educators, mental health professionals, and school resource officers to identify students in need of support. SEL Academy’s training modules are designed to equip school staff with skills in threat assessment, focusing on understanding behavioral indicators and early intervention methods. By educating school staff on how to recognize and manage concerning behaviors, we help schools create environments where students receive the support they need early on, well before their behavior may become a safety concern.

2. Fostering a Positive School Climate

Positive relationships and inclusivity are powerful deterrents against bullying and other forms of school violence. Our curriculum encourages empathy, resilience, and respect for diversity, helping students to build healthy relationships with their peers. SEL Academy's bullying prevention programs emphasize the importance of a safe and supportive school climate, providing students with skills to resolve conflicts, report bullying, and stand up for themselves and others. A supportive school environment, where students feel connected and valued, can reduce the isolation and social stressors that the Protecting America’s Schools report found to be prevalent among students involved in violent incidents.

3. Integrating Mental Health Awareness and Resilience Training

With over half of the attackers in the report displaying mental health challenges prior to incidents, mental health awareness is critical in preventing targeted violence. SEL Academy's programs prioritize resilience-building and mental health literacy, helping students and staff understand and manage psychological stressors. Our curriculum includes modules on mindfulness, emotional regulation, and coping strategies, equipping students to face daily challenges with resilience. Additionally, we offer professional development for educators to better understand the mental health needs of their students, empowering them to act as allies in promoting mental wellness.

4. Teaching Behavioral Indicators and Early Warning Signs

All of the attackers studied displayed concerning behaviors before their incidents, which were often observed by peers or adults. SEL Academy helps schools create systems for recognizing and reporting these early warning signs, training staff and students to be vigilant and proactive. By fostering a culture of open communication and concern, our programs ensure that troubling behaviors are recognized and addressed before they escalate.

5. Engaging Families and Communities in Safety and Wellness Initiatives

Finally, the report highlights the importance of addressing factors beyond the school environment, as many attackers had experienced negative home lives or social stressors. SEL Academy supports family and community engagement through our outreach programs, which provide resources for parents on supporting children’s emotional health and maintaining open communication with schools. When families, communities, and schools work together, students have a stronger, more supportive safety net, helping them feel secure and empowered in all aspects of their lives.

Looking Forward: A Safer, More Compassionate School Experience

At SEL Academy, we believe that proactive, empathetic approaches to education can make schools safer. By addressing the root causes of emotional distress, bullying, and mental health struggles, we are working to create school climates that empower students to thrive. Our social-emotional learning and resilience programs give students the tools they need to understand themselves and others, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. Together, we can make a lasting difference in school safety and create spaces where all students are free to learn and grow.
